Prevention and early detection is key to reducing death rates.  Reducing the number of deaths from colon cancer depends on the detecting and removing of precancerous colorectal polyps, as well as detecting and treating cancer early.

Colon cancer can be prevented by removing precancerous abnormal growths, which can be present in the colon for as many as 10 years before invasive cancer develops.

When colon cancer is found and treated early, the 5 year survival rate is 90%.  Because screening rates are low, less than 40% of colon cancers are found early.
